Dr Abdul Kalam at LVPEI, Bhubaneswar

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, former President of India, visited L V Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar, on May 9, 2008 to deliver the Foundation Day lecture. Major donors of LVPEI were also felicitated at the program. Dr Kalam made a tour of the institute in an open jeep and saw the facilities and services available. He visited the banyan tree, which he had planted at the inauguration of LVPEI Bhubaneswar in July 2006. 

The program was held at the new Emami open-air theatre. Welcoming the guests, LVPEI Chairman Dr Gullapalli N Rao spoke of the genesis of LVPEI. Dr Taraprasad Das, Director, LVPEI, Bhubaneswar, outlined the achievements of the institute and shared his vision of creating an educational hub, the 'International School for Eye care Education' for training various cadres of eye care professionals. 

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam stressed the need for developing indigenous medical equipment. He advocated for free school eye screening for all children, urging all ophthalmologists and paramedical staff to serve at least 20 poor people free of cost annually. This formed part of the oath he administered on the occasion. "L V Prasad Eye Institute, Bhubaneswar, scores 200 out of 100", he quipped. 

Mrs Lalitha Raghuram, Country Director, Operation Eyesight Universal, Mr M S Ramachandran, Chairman, Community Development, BHP Billiton, and Mr B D Sureka, Director, Hartex Rubber, shared the history of their partnership with the LVPEI family. Ms Priti Sureka, Director, Emami Foundation, inaugurated the open-air amphitheatre by lighting the lamp. Before leaving, Dr Abdul Kalam interacted with the staff of all LVPEI campuses through the videoconferencing facility and answered questions.
