Nikhil completed his basic medical education from Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, Mumbai University. He followed it with a DNB (Ophthalmology) from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, winning the Mr K Vasant Madhavan Endowment Gold Medal for best outgoing DNB postgraduate. He did a long-term fellowship in glaucoma from L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad. He was a Glaucoma and Neuro-ophthalmology consultant at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai from 2006 to 2010. He was a co-investigator of the population-based Chennai Glaucoma Follow-Up Study and the Chennai Eye Disease Incidence Study and faculty, examiner and thesis guide for M Phil in Optometry at the Elite School of Optometry, Sankara Nethralaya. He has made several international and national presentations, published in peer-reviewed journals and is a co-author of Sankara Nethralaya’s Atlas of Neuro-ophthalmology. He has won several awards, including the ‘GSI-Pfizer Best Paper Award’ at the 4th SEAGIG International Glaucoma Conference in 2006 and Ruby Banik Memorial Award of the Vision Research Foundation for best research in clinical sciences in ophthalmology for 2007-08. He is a member of the Glaucoma Society of India and the All India Ophthalmological Society.
