The first-ever retina surgeries in Liberia were performed at the LVPEI-managed Liberia Eye Centre at the John F Kennedy Memorial Medical Centre in Monrovia, West Africa. This not only marks a significant milestone for the team at the centre but also for the entire country. Established in July 2017 through a partnership between LVPEI and the Government of Liberia, the Liberia Eye Centre has been steadfast in its commitment to promoting eye health and preventing avoidable blindness in the sub-region. Dr Subhadra Jalali, a senior retina specialist at the Anant Bajaj Retina Institute, operated on eleven patients with complex retina problems during her visit to the Liberia centre. This achievement also signifies the introduction of advanced retina services at the centre. Follow-up care for the patients will be provided by the ophthalmologist at the centre in coordination with Dr Jalali on teleconsultation. Additionally, capacity-building initiatives were undertaken to train residents, fellows, and attending paediatricians in newborn screening for Retinopathy of Prematurity and management of other retinal diseases.
