Indian Journal of Ophthalmology (IJO) Awards

Two impactful studies from LVPEI have been recognized with prestigious awards by the IJO:

1. Drs Anand Brar, Srikanta Padhy and co-authors from LVPEI and other institutes have received the IJO Silver Award 2024 for their paper, 'Characterization of retinal hemorrhages delimited by the internal limiting membrane'.

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10833172/

This research presents a narrative review and detailed analysis of retinal hemorrhages within the internal limiting membrane (ILM), a critical retinal layer.

Clinical relevance: Helps ophthalmologists accurately identify and differentiate sub-ILM hemorrhages from sub-hyaloid hemorrhages, which may have a similar ‘boat-shaped’ appearance.

Impact on future research: Serves as a valuable resource for studies on the pathogenesis and management of ‘pre-retinal’ hemorrhages.

2. Dr Tapas R. Padhi, Mr Souvik Bhunia, and other co-authors from LVPEI introduced an innovative Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) telescreening method using live video conferencing. Their study demonstrated several advantages over the conventional capture, store, and forward approach. This impactful work has earned them the IJO Appreciation Award and will further inspire ongoing ROP efforts across 23 districts and 35 NICUs in Odisha.

Both awards will be presented on behalf of IJO during the All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS) Award Ceremony at the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO) – AIOS Annual Conference at Yashobhoomi Convention Centre, New Delhi, on April 4, 2025.
