Revolutionizing Eye Cancer Care: A Historic Milestone at KVC Campus

In a groundbreaking achievement, Dr Anasua Ganguly and her multidisciplinary team at the Kode Venkatadri Chowdhari (KVC) Campus, Vijayawada, have successfully performed the campus' first-ever Plaque Brachytherapy—a cutting-edge procedure for treating eye cancer. Most likely, it was first ever performed in Andhra Pradesh. Comparable infrastructure to perform plaque brachytherapy does not exist elsewhere in the region. Dr Anasua Ganguly heads KVC Campus and is a renowned ocular oncologist.

This marks a monumental leap in advanced eye cancer care, as the team, comprising oncologists, physicists, anesthetists, technicians, and nurses, treated a 48-year-old patient diagnosed with conjunctival leiomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive tumor of the conjunctiva. Conjunctiva is a thin, transparent membrane that covers the white part of the eye and lines the inside of the eyelids, helping to protect and lubricate the eye.

This milestone is characterized by unwavering commitment, rigorous preparation, and seamless collaboration. Guidance from experts like Dr Vijay Anand Reddy, Senior Oncologist, and Ms Padma Ganesan, Radiation Physicist, from Apollo Cancer Hospital, Hyderabad, and many other was especially instrumental.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the Yalamanchili family for their generous support in establishing the Hima Bindu Yalamanchili Centre for Eye Cancer at KVC Campus, which now offers world-class care and renewed hope to patients with complex ocular tumors.
