The Shantilal Shanghvi Cornea Institute (SSCI) at the LVPEI has achieved the distinction of performing the highest number of corneal transplants ever by any institution in the world—over 50,000—since its inception in 1987. This monumental achievement was made possible by our doctors, extended team, and generous supporters trusting us with their treasure, time, and talent. Above all, the cornea donor families, in their hour of grief, were profound in giving the gift of sight to thousands of those in need. This achievement gains significance in the context of corneal opacities being the second major cause of blindness in India among those who are 50 years and older—and the primary cause in those younger.
