Charanya Ramachandran
Designation: Scientist, Prof. Brien Holden Eye Research Centre Email: charanya@lvpei.org Location: Kallam Anji Reddy Campus, Hyderabad
Charanya Ramachandran received her undergraduate training in Optometry from the Elite School of Optometry and the degree from BITS, Pilani. Later, she completed her PhD in Vision Science from Indiana University, Bloomington. Here, her research focus was on the role of the 'cytoskeletal machinery of the corneal endothelial and trabecular meshwork cells' in regulating the pressure within the eye. Recipient of Chancellor's fellowship Dr Charanya also received other travel awards to present her work at several reputed conferences. In 2010, she joined the L V Prasad Eye Institute as a post-doctoral fellow where her research focussed on 'developing and testing a synthetic carrier material for the transplantation of stem cells to the surface of the eye'. During this time, she published a paper in the journal "Biomaterials" in addition to several others. She was part of the design and execution of a clinical trial to test the safety and efficacy of the material in humans. Subsequently, Dr Charanya Ramachandran joined the research team at the L V Prasad Eye Institute as a faculty and pursues research work on 'corneal endothelium'. The lab focuses on understanding the mechanisms driving endothelial dysfunction, generating cells for transplantation into patients and developing materials to aid transplantation.
Dr Ramachandran has several international publications and grants from DBT, DST and UKIERI to her credit.
