Chitra Kannabiran

Chitra Kannabiran received her Master’s degree in Medical Biochemistry from JIPMER Puducherry. She did her doctorate at the Indian Institute of Science in Bengaluru, in the area of Immunochemistry of Nucleic Acids. For her post-doctoral research, she worked in Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. Her research involved studies on the regulation of transcription by adenoviral E1A oncoprotein. Subsequently, she worked at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in New Jersey, in the general area of regulation of transcription in mammalian cells.

Her association with LVPEI dates back to the year 1996 when she initiated research in the molecular genetics of eye diseases at LVPEI. Her contributions include the identification of novel genes associated with congenital cataract, corneal disorders and hereditary retinal-diseases. She was awarded the Andhra Pradesh Scientist Award in 2008. Editorial board member in various journals such as BMC Medical Genetics, Journal of Genetics and BioMed Research International, she has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and also written a book on the Genetics of Eye Diseases.
