Dr. Sayan Basu is the Prof. D. Balasubramanian Chair of Eye Research and serves as the Director of both the Prof. Brien Holden Eye Research Centre (BHERC) and the Centre for Ocular Regeneration (CORE). He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Rochester, NY, USA. A clinician-scientist and a key opinion leader in corneal and ocular surface disorders, he has significantly contributed to advancements in regenerative medicine and translational research. Clinically, he specializes in high-risk corneal and ocular surface cases, including those with prior surgical failures or complications. His research focuses on scarless corneal wound healing through innovations in stem cells, biomaterials, and 3D bioprinting. His clinical and research efforts are driven by the singular goal of helping all patients achieve their full visual potential, regardless of disease complexity.

Beyond his clinical and research roles, Dr. Basu is deeply committed to mentoring faculty, fellows, and PhD students, fostering the next generation of clinician-scientists. He is widely recognized for his ability to simplify complex concepts for students and colleagues, while also tackling intricate medical and scientific challenges with innovative solutions. Dr. Basu has published over 260 peer-reviewed articles in international scientific journals and serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious publications. He is a member-by-thesis of the Cornea Society and has received the Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Basu advocates for equitable and patient-centric care, personalized yet affordable medicine, and disruptive but controlled innovation to address global healthcare challenges, particularly in developing countries like India. He believes that nothing is impossible and that every problem has a solution, yet every solution comes with its own set of problems.
