Dr Mudit Tyagi is the Head of the Smt. Kanuri Santhamma Centre for Vitreo-Retinal Diseases at L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad.
He did his early medical training from Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and his ophthalmology residency from B J Medical College, Ahmedabad followed by a long-term clinical fellowship in retina and vitreous from L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Hyderabad.
An astute clinician and skilful surgeon, his main areas of interest are complex retinal detachments, macular holes and uveitis. Dr Tyagi has developed an innovative surgical technique of retinal detachment and macular hole surgery called GUARD (Glue Assisted Retinopexy for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachments) that leads to an early visual recovery and does not require strict post-operative positioning. This is especially beneficial for elderly patients and those with spinal and other orthopaedic ailments. The Vitreo-Retinal Society of India recognized this technique as the best surgical innovation of the year in 2019. This technique was also recognised as the best ophthalmic innovation by All India Ophthalmology Society in 2023.
Dr Tyagi is also the recipient of the 2024 Kreissig Award for Excellence in Retinal Surgery given by Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) for his research in exploring the role of fibrin glue in vitreoretinal surgeries.
Dr Tyagi has also received the Honor Award and Achievement Award from the prestigious American Society for Retina Specialists (ASRS). He has also received numerous other awards and recognitions throughout his career and is a member of several academic societies. He has over 150 scientific publications in international peer reviewed journals and serves as a reviewer for Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, Journal of Ocular Inflammation and Infection, BMC Ophthalmology, International Ophthalmology, Retina, Scientific Reports, European Journal of Ophthalmology and Indian Journal of Ophthalmology.
When not pursuing retina, he likes travelling with his wife and daughter and is also an avid bibliophile and a history enthusiast.
