Dr Sujata Das is a faculty member at the L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), Bhubaneswar since 2006. She was the Director of the Institute from 2012-17. She is the Medical Director of Drushti Daan Eye Bank at Bhubaneswar since 2007.
She received her postgraduate training in Ophthalmology from MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Odisha, and FRCS (Glasg.) in Ophthalmology. She completed her subspecialty training in ‘Cornea and Anterior Segment’ from LVPEI, Hyderabad. She also completed her ICO Fellowship in ‘Cornea’ at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, Germany, and Clinical Fellowship in ‘Cornea’ at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital and CERA, Melbourne University, Australia.
She pursued an Advanced Management Program for Healthcare from Indian School of Business, Hyderabad. She received a D.Sc. (honoris causa) from Ravenshaw University, Odisha.
She is a recipient of the Developing Country Eye Researcher Award from the ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) Foundation, USA, and an Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO). She is also the recipient of IJO-AIOS Gold Award, B K Narayan Rao Oration Award and K R Dutta Award from All India Ophthalmological Society (AIOS); and Prof Biswambhar Rajguru Oration Award from Odisha State Ophthalmological Society.
She has served as a member of the ORBIS faculty for the evaluation of subspecialty education program in Cornea. Currently, she is the Chairperson (East Zone) of Eye Bank Association of India, and Member of the Specialists Board (Ophthalmology) of National Board of Examinations, New Delhi. She has also served as a Member of the Working Committee for drafting “Eye Banking Standards of India 2020” for National Programme for Control of Blindness & Visual Impairment.
Dr Das is presently involved in research encompassing corneal infections, eye banking, and genetic analysis of Fuchs’ Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy. She has authored over 140 peer-review manuscripts and book chapters to her credit. She has recently published a book entitled “Infections of the Cornea and Conjunctiva".
She is actively involved in skill development in eye-care in Odisha. Under her leadership, the recovery of donor cornea by Drushti Daan Eye Bank has significantly increased to >1000 per year and has crossed the 10,000 mark in corneal tissue harvest since its establishment with successful implementation of Hospital Corneal Retrieval Program in major hospitals in Odisha.
